5 things to consider when Choosing New Granite Countertops
It’s a pretty safe bet in Las Vegas that if your countertops are not new, then your countertops are probably ready for a remodel. For the past few years and for the foreseeable future is pretty much the go-to material for new countertop designs, whether in a kitchen renovation or in walk in shower, granite is highly sought after by people remodeling their homes.
When it comes to choosing granite, there are a lot of things to be aware of. Do you want a modern look, or something classic? Do you want lighter or darker stone? What granite best fits with the style of your cabinets, flooring and / or appliances?
Taking your time with this process helps to minimize making any mistakes. The investment of new countertops, regardless of the material being used, makes it worth taking your time to get answers to your family’s questions prior to making an investment which will last a long time.
What should you not do when Selecting granite for your home renovation in Las Vegas?
Each slab of granite is a completely unique piece of earth that adds to the aesthetic value, and when done correctly, the resale value, of your residential property. Granite can be the difference that helps your new beautiful bathroom and walk in shower to hold up to humidity and moisture, which can be the cause of mold and other bacteria in the shower.
Here are the five important factors to consider when choosing new granite countertops.
Choose the right thickness of your granite countertop
You might be surprised if you never bought granite that there are actually three standard marble thicknesses when it comes to countertops. You can choose three-quarter inch, one and one-quarter inch, or one and one-half inch. The industry goes by CM so don’t be surprised if you hear 2CM or 3CM when selecting your new granite slabs.
When you design your home renovation with Element Cabinet Design our staff of professional and courteous home interior design and estimating team will make sure that the proper granite thickness is suggested and you will be given options such as edge finishes which can really liven up a granite countertop.
Chose the right color for your remodeling space
Darker colors of granite are less likely to stain in comparison to lighter colors. If you are planning to install the granite countertop in an area that does not get much interaction with foods or liquids, then it is ok to select a lighter color with a complex pattern. However, if you expect that things could be spilled on the granite or it could be in an area with a lot of moisture, then go for a dark color with less of a pattern.
Granite countertops can be sealed so the above suggestion is not written in stone, so to speak, however it is a good general guideline for selecting your new granite slabs.
Layouts and seam placements are key to a great granite countertop
As you begin to design your new renovation space, be sure to communicate with our design professional that you want as few seams as possible. You will be happy you did once the job is complete. The last thing you want after paying for granite countertops for a kitchen or bathroom is unsightly seams in the wrong spots.
Choosing the right complimentary materials such as cabinets
As a designer’s rule of thumb so to speak it’s always a good idea to choose an edge for your granite countertop that complements the style of cabinet or vanity. As an example, beveled and flat edges compliment a room with modern cabinets installed. Traditional style cabinets typically get what is referred to in the granite countertop industry as a bull nose edge. This style of edge is rounded on the edges to a half circle and if you have small children who are at risk for bumping their heads, this helps to lessen the impact.
Everything including the kitchen sink!
Under mounting your kitchen sink gives your kitchen clean and useful look. Just think about the added convenience of using the cleaning device to wipe everything right into the sink. This is possible when you under mount the sink the kitchen sinks into the granite countertop.
It’s not uncommon for a top mounted sink to collect bacteria around the edges making an under mount set up good for keeping the kitchen clean.
